The Power (and Biology) of Love

2/13/2024

Note from Dr. Gazda: “I am honored to have co-written this with my dear friend, Dr. Ilene Naomi Rusk, who is a brilliant and heart-centered neuropsychologist at the Brain & Behavior Clinic in Boulder Colorado. Dr Rusk has authored numerous papers in the areas of psychology, neuropharmacology, and neuroscience and we have often collaborated on other articles.”
Oh, Valentine's Day – the time when love is in the air, and hearts beat a little faster, anticipating a bit of romance.

It’s well established that for a variety of reasons many of us skimp on nutrient-rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and proteins, all of which provide essential vitamins and minerals.

Vit D Deficiency: The Silent Global Pandemic and Negative Brain Effects.

1/26/2024

If you’re a regular reader here, you’ve likely seen our previous articles concerning the importance of getting enough vitamin D.  As much as we and many clinicians talk about it, deficiency of this critical nutrient still affects an estimated 35 percent of adults in the United States and is one of many modifiable lifestyle factors that appear to increase the risk of early onset or late dementia diagnosis.

Sugar and the not-so-sweet news when it comes to our wellbeing.

11/26/2023

We are ‘surrounded by sugar’ – 80% of the foods in your supermarket contain sugar. The excessive intake of highly processed sugary products is contributing to a national crisis where approximately one in three children and two out of three adults are estimated to be suffering from obesity. Other factors that impact these statistics include sedentary lifestyles and overall poor dietary choices or options for healthy foods.

Low serum vitamin D linked to cognitive impairment and disability.

If you are a regular reader here, you know how we’ve often stressed the importance of vitamin D! Our practice is emphatic about its role in immune health and keeping our vitamin D levels above 60 ng/mL – and ideally, between 80-100 ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter). Unfortunately, many of us simply don’t get enough of this nutrient on a daily basis, what with our indoor lifestyles or use of protective sunscreen when we are outdoors.

Intermittent fasting – could it be instrumental in the fight against Alzheimer’s?

8/29/2023

We’ve often written about the ways that dietary approaches can affect the course of many diseases and conditions; one of these strategies is intermittent fasting that numerous investigational trials also have closely examined. And recently, we read a brilliant study published just this month about the impact of intermittent fasting on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) that showed some very promising results.

Is it time to bring NAC back as an approach in treating neurogenerative disease?

7/19/2023

If you’ve browsed the health product aisles at your local grocery or specialty store, you may have noticed NAC, or N-acetyl cysteine, which is a supplement form of cysteine. Cysteine is a non-essential amino acid found in high-protein foods such as beef, chicken, eggs, and whole grains. What makes cysteine semi-essential is that your body can produce it from two other amino acids - serine and methionine.

Listen to your brain – and go ahead and eat the chocolate!!

That’s right, we’re encouraging you to consider enjoying (some caveats apply) one of so many people’s favorite treats and know that you could be doing something positive for your brain.

Having recently read the findings from the COSMOS study, we were motivated - maybe a bit selfishly since we love chocolate - to explore the subject of cocoa products and whether these could also help our neurological processes.

Important new evidence sheds light on the issues.
I wanted to share with you information from a recent piece I read in The Washington Post. Once the valedictorian of her high school class and then thriving college student in Maryland, a young woman in the aftermath of a traumatic event developed severe neuropsychiatric symptoms and became “locked in her own state of psychosis.”

We have often highlighted in our blogs the pro-inflammatory impacts of consuming too much sugar (virtually every disease including neurological conditions has inflammation at its core). And we’ve also written about the detriments of using aspartame (also known by its popular brand name Equal, among others) to replace that sugar in your coffee or other beverages.

With more than 6 million individuals in the U.S. who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, there is an overwhelming urgency to identify treatments that can be of real help in slowing the progression of symptoms. But it’s equally important to understand that some therapies may not only be less than effective, they could have negative impacts as one evidence-based review revealed.

Science - and history – show us just how crucial it is for our brains to get enough vitamin D!!

3/24/2023

Every day we see more research that points to how brain health can be impacted by not getting enough vitamin D. Yet another recent investigation that examined the relationship between levels of this vital nutrient in stroke patients and the related outcomes found “a novel mechanism underlying the association between vitamin D deficiency and poor stroke outcomes.”

Cholesterol and glucose levels at age 35 linked to dementia occurrence in later years.
We know that our dietary choices can have an impact on general health and brain wellness – you’ve likely heard us talk about avoiding the Standard American Diet (SAD) that includes processed foods, sugar (which we know increases inflammation that can lead to autoimmune neurological disease), and options that are high in sodium and unhealthy fats.

What if there was another way to treat neuropathic pain?

Often described as shooting, stabbing, or throbbing sensations, neuropathic pain or neuropathy has many origins and manifestations. It typically can happen if your nervous system becomes damaged or is not functioning properly, whether due to trauma or disease. You may experience pain emanating from any of the various levels of the nervous system, such as the peripheral nerves, the spinal cord and the brain.1

In 1952, author H.E. Bates’ essay, “Brains in the Feet,” offered a lyrical testament to what he described as the beauty of soccer or, as it’s known in England, football. The title was a direct reference to Bernard Shaw’s observation that “footballers (aka soccer players) think with their feet.” This gave us pause to consider the link between thoughts, actions and outcomes and the potential for those who engage in this popular sport to indeed affect their mind well beyond executing a play…

Obesity in our youth is another pandemic woe we must address.

A new report more clearly substantiates the need to treat obesity as a serious health condition impacting the current and future wellbeing of children. Previous trends in childhood obesity should have alarmed parents and physicians alike – but this latest retrospective cohort study conducted by Kaiser Permanente of Southern California (KPSC) of over 200,000 young patients’ electronic health records identified significant increases in body mass index (BMI) occurring between March 2020 and January 2021.1
