More research points to the harmful link between glyphosate and our brain’s wellbeing.

We have often discussed the impact of chemical toxins that negatively affect our health and that of our environment.

In a recent study, researchers made these concerns abundantly clear, having examined the harmful effects to the brain relevant to glyphosate, which is the active ingredient in many commercial herbicides and the most widely used herbicide worldwide (frequently marketed under the brand name Roundup).

The results of this study show for the first time that glyphosate does in fact infiltrate the brain, easily crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and elevating both the expression of TNFα and soluble Aβ. This is shown to disrupt the transcriptome, which is the protein-coding part of an organism's genome, in a dose-dependent manner and suggests that exposure to this herbicide may have detrimental outcomes regarding the health of the general population.

Aberrant TNFα signaling has been implicated in numerous pathological conditions, including cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis, as well as immune, inflammatory, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. As the study authors noted, “the recent rise in glyphosate application to corn and soy crops correlates positively with increased death rates due to Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.”

There are many other perspectives regarding the deleterious impacts to our brain health that also correspond to this recent research. From her book, Toxic Legacy: How the Weedkiller Glyphosate Is Destroying Our Health and the Environment, Dr. Stephanie Seneff wrote, “Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the pervasive weedkiller Roundup. It is the most widely-used herbicide in the world, and the United States uses more per capita than any other country. The United States also faces a healthcare crisis with alarmingly rising rates of diabetes, obesity, autism, Alzheimer’s, infertility and cancer.  In this talk, I will argue that glyphosate is a primary factor in the declining health of our population. I will also provide evidence that glyphosate is disrupting the entire ecosystem, from water fleas to bees to deer, pigs and humans. I propose a unique mechanism of toxicity of glyphosate based on its effects as an amino acid analogue of glycine."
