Be the change for better education about neuropsychiatric disease.

Psychiatry and, yes, neurology too has literally been turned on its head with the burgeoning amount of research in the field of psychoneuroimmunology.

Since the discovery of NMDAR autoantibodies in 2007/8 by Dr. Josep Dalmau and his group and with “widening” the diagnosis of Autoimmune Encephalitis (AE), we have advanced the understanding of the spectrum of disease.

ME (mild encephalitis) starts with neuro-inflammation and is grossly under diagnosed. I see this more and more in my PANS and PANDAS kids...many have suffered with symptoms for YEARS without an accurate diagnosis. And just as disturbingly, I have also seen this over the last 30 years happening to numerous multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Inflammation truly is the root cause of all disease with often just a tiny piece of genetics thrown in the mix. And I believe the ENVIRONMENT is fueling the epidemic of all disease on a global platform now.

So the excitement builds in EARLY recognition of symptoms and targeting “brain on fire,” an approach which holds promise and hope for improved treatments that offer potentially rapid therapeutic success and outcomes.

This petition, sent to me by a colleague with first-hand understanding of the issues, is asking the American Academy of Psychiatry to become educated on the autoimmune and inflammatory mechanisms leading to neuropsychiatric disease. I encourage you to please read the information provided there and consider its message and relevance to what we are all seeing in so many instances of neurological disease.
